|Personal Judging Philosophy
Judging provides the opportunity to recognize and promote excellence in quiltmaking
workmanship and design. My comments are intended to compliment the quilt maker
on a job well done, or to gently encourage the quilt maker to do better. Every quilt
deserves positive comment. I don’t feel it necessary to keep searching for
constructive comments if a quilt is outstanding, and it is not necessary to list all areas
needing improvement on a quilt deficient in workmanship. I judge for the same
reason that I make quilts; I love the process and tradition of quiltmaking. Making,
teaching, and judging all serve to promote and protect this wonderful tradition.
| In 1994, I completed the “Short Course in Judging” offered by the National Quilting
Association (NQA) and in 1996 became a NQA Certified Judge. I now maintain
certification with the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges. I've judged shows in
Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West
Virginia, as well as the 2003, 2008, and 2013 NQA Shows. I have experience judging
both quilts and wearables.
